Job Description

Catalent San Diego is hiring for a Pharmaceutical Chemist II/III. The Pharmaceutical Chemist will be responsible for the formulation and analytical development of solid oral drug candidates for human clinical studies. Qualified candidate will be hired at the appropriate level (II-III) commensurate with education and years of required relevant experience.

The Chemist II must be able to independently plan and execute simple laboratory experiments and will be expected to clearly communicate the status of projects to management and Clients. The Chemist II will be developing the use of innovation and creativity in exploring alternative approaches to problem solving. The individual may be required to assist in the creation and/or revision of company SOPs. The Chemist II will be increasingly sought for training and mentoring of other colleagues.

The Chemist III will be expected to take responsibility for the completion of projects under minimal supervision. The individual will be expected to develop time lines and plan series of experiments as required by service agreements and then coordinate and possibly delegate responsibilities to meet Client's expectations. The individual must have demonstrated proficiency in the development of one or more drug product dosage forms.

The Role (daily responsibilities)

  • Designs and executes formulation development for oral solids using technologies like – wet/dry granulation, spray drying, tableting and encapsulation.

  • Determine critical tests, data interpretation and formulation screening based on in vitro data.

  • Develop strategic experimental plans and timelines. Experimental designs will originate from the individual and be proposed to supervisor.

  • Data interpretation should be conducted with limited guidance. Individuals will be able to identify key factors from data and understand the importance of the findings.

  • Primary contact for clients on routine technical issues.

  • Lead discussions with clients on technical topics relating to their project.

  • Propose a formulation strategy to supervisor based on available data.

  • Work with relevant stakeholders within the organization to initiate and manage tech transfer between departments.

  • Author product development reports and other technical documents related to the formulation development activities.

  • Provide technical guidance and support to team members in new technologies and equipment

  • Work with cross functional teams to improve workflow efficiency.

  • Supervisory duties for laboratory assistants and possibly one full time employee.

The Candidate (requirements)

  • To qualify for the level II, candidates must have a Bachelors degree, in a scientific discipline (physical or biological science, chemistry preferred), with 1 to 4 years of experience in analytical and/or formulation techniques. OR Masters degree with 1 to 3 years of experience in analytical and/or formulation techniques.

  • To qualify for the level III, candidates must have a Bachelors degree, in a scientific discipline (physical or biological science, chemistry preferred), with 3 to 6 years of experience in analytical and/or formulation techniques. OR Masters degree with 2 to 4 years of experience in analytical and/or formulation techniques

  • Individuals should have a good general foundation of scientific principles, chemistry concepts, and be proficient in core formulation techniques, GMPs, GLPs, and technical writing.

  • Understand the basics of GMP and IND enabling formulation strategies for solid oral dosage forms

  • Knowledge of HPLC method development and/or troubleshooting is a plus.

  • The candidate should be comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, interacting with internal and external teams.
